March 30, 2010

Changes To Syllabus:
I will be at a conference on Thursday, April 8th, so there will be NO CLASS. Shift all assignments down one day, i.e. what was scheduled for April 8th will be shifted to April 13th, what was scheduled for April 13th will now be the 15th, etc, until you get to April 27th, which you can scratch completely. Then we'll be back on schedule for April 29th.

Journal #18: I Hate
We're now getting into argumentative essays, so we want to explore where your strong feelings reside. For this prompt I want you to write about something you really hate. It can be something large or something minute. Explore why you hate it and maybe even possible solutions?

Cliche of the Day:

Cliché: as the crow flies

Meaning: in a straight line, by the shortest route (as a crow would fly) (example)

Rewrite 1: as the plane flies
Rewrite 2: as the gaggle travels
Rewrite 3: as the wind flows
Rewrite 4: as the clouds cross
Rewrite 5: as the stars pass overhead

The writing lab is closed from Monday to Saturday of Spring Break, FYI.

For those of you who didn't make it to class, make sure to procure your own workshopping outside of class. Your final expository essays with attachments are due on Tuesday, March 30 when we return from the break.

Journal #17: Wild Card

That just means you can write about whatever you like. We brainstormed possible topics for those of you who like prompts, including Spring Break, spring in general, idols, movies, music, the "real" benefits of college...etc. Have fun.

Extra credit opportunity:
Here's another opportunity for extra credit if you want to attend and write a 1-page response. Due no later than April 29th:

Thank you Richard Brown, Tiffany Smith, Andra Jones and Richard Martinez for being brave enough to let the class workshop their papers! Thank you!!!

As promised, here is a link to Martin Luther King Jr. "I Have a Dream" speech from August, 1963: click here

One more day until spring break! You can do it!

Extra Credit:
For one point extra credit: Rent the movie Dead Poets Society and watch it. Write up a one-page response comparing that movie to the essay "I Just Want to Be Average" by Mike Rose. All extra credit due to me by April 29th.

Rough Drafts of your Expository Essays are due Thursday, 3/18 with four copies for workshopping.

Journal #16: Instructions to your Body Double

Okay, imagine you are going out of town for Spring Break. Imagine that you have hired a "body double" to live your life for you while you will be out of town. Write an instructional note to your body double explaining information they might need to know about being "you" for a week (how to deal with mother-in-law, how to avoid ex's phone calls, how to discipline the children, etc.) Write for 10 minutes.

Great classes today! For next class: Richard, Tiffany, Andra and Richard, don't forget to send me your essays!

If you haven't read George Orwell's essay already, please do.

What's a cliche? Here's a link to Cliche-a-day

Here's today's cliche:

Cliché: shoestring budget

Meaning: limited resources or of lowest financial means (example)

Rewrite 1: second-hand budget
Rewrite 2: single-flower budget
Rewrite 3: staples funds
Rewrite 4: hand-me-down reserves
Rewrite 5: do-it-yourself plan

Comment: This cliché is full of opportunity for rewrites and recasting, and in today's economy there is likely ample reason to, with so many stories of people cutting back on spending or trimming luxuries.

Journal Entry #15: What I Know (and how I know it)

Especially considering the essay "Just Walk on By" that we read for today, ask yourself: What do I know? You've all been on the planet for however many years, and in this time there are certain things you've come to know or understand. What are they? Make a list or pick one as the start of an expository essay...

First of all, here is the link to George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language," which was written in 1946:

Politics and the English Language

And here's some information on George Orwell

Don't let this essay intimidate you--you are all smart enough to "get" it!

Journal #14: How To __________

In this journal entry, fill in the "how to" blank above. It can be something serious, like how to bake a cake, or maybe not so serious like how to break up with your boyfriend. Either way, you need to be the "authority" on this subject, or at least convince us that you are in your writing. Get creative.

Don't forget: NO CLASS THIS THURSDAY, 3/4

Some small changes/explanations to the syllabus:

Take Home Expository Prompt due 3/9 (In your syllabus it says TBA): Read at least one newspaper article, paying attention to the style of journalistic writing: straight expository information answering the questions who, what, when, where, and how. Note the "lead" sentence format: who, what, when, where, and how all answered in the first sentence. Write a newspaper article about some event in your life this week or something you witness (I prefer something that just happened rather than something from the past). Give it a headline, lead sentence, etc. One page.

3/9: We will also be discussing "Pronouns" from Sin and Syntax as well as the other two posted essays.
3/16: We will have a class workshopping day for part of this day. Details to follow
3/18: We will discuss the handout "Someone to Read Your Drafts" by Anne Lamott in addition to workshopping. I'll hand out when it gets closer.

Definition: Bevatron (good thing I checked--I was totally off)
Bevatron definition

Noun 1. bevatron - a cyclotron that accelerates protons up to several billion electron volts

cyclotron - an accelerator that imparts energies of several million electron-volts to rapidly moving particles

Journal #13: Why I Write

First of all, make sure to read Joan Didian's essay "Why I Write." Then, after reading, I want you to write your own journal entry on Why YOU Write. Write for 10 minutes.
